An administrative professional's need for self-care!
Wikipedia defines #selfcare as the process of taking care of oneself with behaviours that promote health and active management of illness when it occurs. So let me start by saying self-care is not the same as self-indulgence or being selfish.
Admins and assistants are always so focused on helping others that we forget about ourselves or prioritize our own needs last. As the saying goes, "If you don’t love yourself, nobody will. Not only that, you won’t be good at loving anyone else. Loving starts with the self.”—Wayne Dyer. Taking time for self-care is essential if we are going to be present for someone else. Several research shows that when self-care is regularly practiced, the benefits are reduced stress, improved immune system, increased productivity, and higher self-esteem.
Self-care allows us to be the happiest and most productive versions of ourselves at work, at home and in our community.
Self-care can be incorporated everywhere. Here are some ways to incorporate self-care into our daily lives.
Physical Space
Make sure that the environment in which you work or live makes you feel safe, whether it is at home or in the office. Lighting, disturbances, physical things, etc., should all be taken into consideration.
Define boundaries
You need to define #boundaries both professionally and personally and you need to be able to say no to people and to be firm about not violating those boundaries in any way.
Family & Community
Invest time in your family and community so that you can enjoy your time with those you love and care about. Become a part of your community, make a contribution and give back. It always feels fulfilling when you are able to give back to the community. Be #genuinely present when you are spending time with family or friends in your community.
Values & Beliefs
Review and reflect on your #values and #beliefs. Your actions and decisions are guided by them. Find ways to express them personally & professionally in a healthy way.
Hobbies & Interests
Resume an old hobby or learn something altogether. Explore, be playful, and find ways to express your #authentic self.
Sleep, Diet & Exercise
Proper sleep, diet and exercise are proven to reduce stress and increase productivity. This sets the foundation for healthy #wellbeing.
Mindfulness
Be #mindful of everything you do. It links all self-care actions. Recognize when you need help and be grateful for all the support and achievements.
Self-care is the most valuable gift we can give ourselves. Make it a personal commitment. “Self-care is giving the world the best of you instead of what’s left of you."
In a recent conversation with Carol Schulte, we were talking about how self-care is so important especially now with the world gradually emerging out of the pandemic. Our conversation was the inspiration behind my writing this article. Thanks Carol!
